CHAPTER 16
Malia was originally from Seattle, and she met Mark at a nightclub where he was filling in for the guitar player. He used to play with this band back in Arizona, but the group decided to relocate because the scene was better for their music. Mark chose to stay behind because he had just purchased a home. Plus, he loved his job as the General Manager of the busiest head shop in town. The rest of the guys decided to split a house there and see if they could make something of themselves. Although he was a bit envious, he had several side hustles, and the band wasnât his career goal. He preferred to be in the spotlight and not on the sidelines.
This particular weekend, the guitar player was going out of town, and they asked Mark to come and fill in. He was happy to help and looked forward to getting back on stage, even if it was just for one night. He took it all in as he walked around the venue. He enjoyed the dimly lit ambiance, illuminated posters, and photos of bands that had played in the space before him. The hum of conversation competed with the rock music playing in the background, and he smiled upon approaching the bar to grab a drink before their set.
He noticed a beautiful woman sitting alone at the bar, scrolling on her phone, seemingly disinterested in anyone around her. As Mark ordered a vodka soda, she piped up and said she would have one, too. He chuckled and introduced himself as Mark, the guest guitarist for the night. He was hoping this would impress her. She looked up from her phone and said, âHi, Iâm Malia, the guest dancer from the strip club next door.â
Their drinks arrived, and they clinked their glasses for a toast. Before Mark could get his wallet out, Malia had already put cash out for them both. She then said, âIf your band sucks, I want my money back,â and returned to looking at her phone. Mark didnât know if he should be insulted or excited, but he was definitely turned on. He took the stage to play with a bit of extra pep in his step. As they continued to jam, Malia sat at the bar, completely ignoring them and still attached to her device. He needed to focus on the songs but couldnât help but be preoccupied by this rare specimen he encountered.
Even in this eclectic group, Malia stuck out. She appeared to have on her full stage makeup from dancing but had changed into joggers and a baggy T-shirt. Her dark hair cascaded in waves down her back, and he could ever so slightly make out the sight of her swaying a bit from side to side. Occasionally, she would get up to stretch, and he got a glimpse of her toned, spray-tanned tummy. He was on a mission to talk to her again before the night ended.
Just as the band
